The county Parks and Recreation Department says Kahaluu Beach Park in Kailua-Kona is reopen following repairs to a sewer cleanout.

The county Parks and Recreation Department says Kahaluu Beach Park in Kailua-Kona is reopen following repairs to a sewer cleanout.

The park was closed Feb. 24 after less than 100 gallons of wastewater discharged onto the beach and into beach waters because of a broken sewer cleanout. Parks and Recreation repaired the cleanout the same day, but work to reroute the pipes in the park required additional time.

Parks and Recreation Director Charmaine Kamaka in a Friday announcement praised a patient public, Environmental Management’s Wastewater Division help and maintenance personnel.

“We appreciate the hard work of our parks-maintenance staff. They really pulled for us to get the park reopened quickly and safely,” she said.
